When to eat it. Has fish, so keep it for fish days: the Annunciation, Palm Sunday, and Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends in much of the Nativity Fast.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Simmer the vegetables in 2 litres (8 cups) of water with the oil for 20 minutes.
  2. Add the fish and simmer gently 15 minutes.
  3. Lift out the fish, remove the bones, and return the flesh to the pot.
  4. Season, add lemon and parsley.

Tip. The oldest Greek fish soup, from the pot (kakavi) fishermen carried in their boats.

Fasting customs differ between churches and parishes. When in doubt, follow what your priest gives you. Not sure what today allows? Check the Orthodox calendar.
