When to eat it. Made with oil. Keep it for days when wine and oil are allowed, like weekends in Lent and most of the Nativity Fast.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Fry the onions and mushrooms in half the oil with the paprika, salt and pepper.
  2. Layer the potatoes and mushroom mixture in an oiled dish, ending with potatoes.
  3. Top with tomato slices, pour over the water and the rest of the oil.
  4. Cover and bake at 200°C (400°F) for 30 minutes, uncover and bake 20 more until golden.

Tip. Serbian musaka is made with potatoes, not eggplant.

Fasting customs differ between churches and parishes. When in doubt, follow what your priest gives you. Not sure what today allows? Check the Orthodox calendar.
