The Eastern Cross/Guides/Find your patron saint

127 saints to discover

Find your patron saint

Every Orthodox Christian has a saint who prays for them, a friend in heaven. Search by your name, your birthday, or whatever you're carrying right now.

English, Greek or Slavic forms all work. Try , or .

I · The idea

What a patron saint is

When someone is baptized or received into the Orthodox Church, they take the name of a saint. From then on that saint is their patron: a heavenly friend who prays for them, and an example of what a life given to Christ looks like.

Orthodox Christians ask the saints to pray for them the same way you'd ask a friend at church to pray for you. The saints are alive in Christ, and the Church has always believed their prayers are powerful. Worship belongs to God alone. The saints are honoured as His friends.

You'll notice that some saints are especially known for certain needs: St. Phanourios for lost things, St. Panteleimon for the sick, St. Nicholas for travellers. These come from the saints' own lives and from generations of people whose prayers were answered. They are traditions, and you can bring any need to any saint.

II · Choosing

How to choose your patron saint

There's no single rule. Here are the ways Orthodox Christians usually find their saint.

Your own nameThe most common way. If your name already belongs to a saint, that saint is yours. A George has St. George, and a Sophia has St. Sophia.
Your birthday or baptism daySome take a saint celebrated on the day they were born or baptized. The Church remembers saints every day of the year.
A saint whose life speaks to youMany converts choose a saint whose story moved them: a former soldier picks St. George, a nurse picks St. Elizabeth, someone with a hard past picks St. Mary of Egypt.
Family and heritageGreeks often name a child after a grandparent, and so inherit that saint. Others choose a saint of their people or homeland, like St. Herman for North America or St. Patrick for Ireland.
  1. Read a few livesUse the finder above, then read the full lives of the saints that catch your attention. The OCA's lives of the saints are a good place to start.
  2. Pray about itAsk God to show you. Many people find the saint seems to choose them: the same name keeps coming up, or a story won't leave them alone.
  3. Talk to your priestIf you're preparing for baptism or chrismation, your priest helps you choose the name you'll receive. He'll make sure it belongs to a saint of the Church.
  4. Get to know themFind their icon, learn their feast day and their hymn, and start asking for their prayers. A patron saint is a relationship that grows over a lifetime.

III · Your saint and you

Living with your patron saint

  1. Keep their iconPut an icon of your saint in your prayer corner, next to Christ and the Theotokos.
  2. Celebrate your name dayYour saint's feast is your name day, and in Greece and many Orthodox countries it matters more than your birthday. Go to church if you can, and celebrate with family and friends. Look up the date on our name day page.
  3. Learn their hymnEvery saint has a short hymn, the troparion or apolytikion. Saying it in your daily prayers is a simple way to ask for their help.
  4. Ask for their prayersA short prayer is enough: "Holy St. Nicholas, pray to God for me." Bring them your worries, your family and your struggles.
  5. Imitate themRead their life every year on their feast day, and look for one thing in it you can live out yourself.
Found yours? In The Eastern Cross you can set your patron saint, and the whole server remembers you on their feast day.

Questions

Do I have to have a patron saint?

Every Orthodox Christian receives a saint's name at baptism or chrismation, so in practice yes. If you were baptized in another church and haven't been received into Orthodoxy, you can still choose a saint to pray to and learn from, and many inquirers do.

What if my name isn't a saint's name?

Many names have a saint behind them in another language: Sean, Ivan and Juan are all John, and Dimitri is Demetrios. If yours truly has no saint, Orthodox Christians usually take a saint's name at baptism or chrismation, often one that sounds close, or the saint of the day they were born or received.

Can I choose a saint who doesn't match my name?

Yes. Converts often choose a saint whose life moved them, and that saint's name becomes their name in the Church. You can also love and pray to as many saints as you like, beyond your patron.

Can a woman have a male patron saint, or a man a female one?

The baptismal name is usually a saint of the same sex, often in a feminine or masculine form: a Georgia has St. George, and a Nicole has St. Nicholas. Anyone can have a deep devotion to any saint.

What is a name day?

Your name day is the feast of the saint you are named after. In Greece, Cyprus, Russia and much of the Orthodox world it is celebrated as much as a birthday or more, with church in the morning and friends dropping by in the evening.

Is this the same as Catholic patron saints?

The idea is the same: a saint who prays for you and whom you imitate. The Orthodox Church has no official list assigning saints to professions or causes. The associations on this page come from the saints' lives and from the devotion of Orthodox people over the centuries.

Why are there two dates for each feast?

Most Orthodox churches use the New (Revised Julian) Calendar for fixed feasts, while the Russian, Serbian, Georgian and Jerusalem churches and Mount Athos keep the Old (Julian) Calendar, which is currently 13 days behind. St. Nicholas is December 6 on the New Calendar and December 19 on the Old.
