Cyril and Methodius to the Slavs

863–869 · 5 stops

Sent by St. Photios with a new alphabet and the Gospel in Slavonic.

    1. Thessaloniki

The brothers grow up in Thessaloniki, hearing the Slavic speech of the countryside around the city.

    2. Constantinople

Prince Rastislav of Moravia asks for teachers. St. Photios sends the brothers, and Cyril creates an alphabet for the Slavs.

    3. Velehrad, Moravia

They translate the Gospels and the services into Slavonic and train disciples.

    4. Venice

In Venice they defend worship in the Slavic tongue against those who allowed only Hebrew, Greek and Latin.

    5. Rome

Rome approves the Slavonic Liturgy. Cyril becomes a monk and reposes there in 869.
