Gelati Monastery

King David the Builder founded Gelati in 1106 near Kutaisi as a monastery and an academy, and he gathered scholars there from across the Christian East. Its main church holds a great mosaic of the Theotokos and rich frescoes. King David is buried under the gateway, so that all who enter walk over him, as he had asked in humility.
