Panagia of Tinos

1823

In 1823, during the Greek War of Independence, the nun St. Pelagia had a vision that showed where an icon of the Annunciation was buried. The icon was found in a field, and the great church of Panagia Evangelistria was built over the place. It became the main pilgrimage church of Greece. On the feasts of the Annunciation and the Dormition, pilgrims crawl on their knees up the long road from the harbour.
