Serbian Patriarchate

1219, patriarchate 1346

St. Sava won independence for the Serbian Church in 1219, and in 1346 it became a patriarchate with its seat at Peć in Kosovo. Under Ottoman rule the patriarchate was suppressed twice, and it was restored in 1920 with its seat in Belgrade. The Church of St. Sava in Belgrade, built on the spot where the Ottomans burned the saint’s relics, is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
