Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius

c. 1337

St. Sergius built a small wooden church to the Holy Trinity in the forest around 1337, and the monastery that grew around it became the spiritual heart of Russia. St. Andrei Rublev painted his Trinity icon for it. The tsars came on foot on pilgrimage, and the Lavra withstood a sixteen-month Polish siege in 1608–1610. St. Sergius’ relics rest in the Trinity Cathedral, where a moleben is sung beside them all day long.
