Apostle Matthew

Matthew, also called Levi, was a tax collector in Capernaum. When Christ said, “Follow me,” he got up from his table, left everything, and held a great feast for the Lord with his fellow tax collectors. He wrote the first Gospel, by tradition first in Hebrew for the Jews. He preached in Ethiopia or Parthia and died a martyr. His relics have rested in Salerno in Italy since the 10th century.
