The Eastern Cross/Orthodox World/Apostle Matthias
Saint
Apostle Matthias
Matthias had followed Christ from His baptism. After the Ascension the Apostles prayed and cast lots between him and Joseph Barsabas, and the lot fell on Matthias, who was numbered with the eleven (Acts 1). By tradition he preached in Judea and in Colchis, today’s western Georgia, and the Georgian Church holds that he is buried at the fortress of Gonio near Batumi.
