Apostle Simon the Zealot

1st century · New Athos, Abkhazia · Feast May 10

Simon is called the Zealot for his fiery devotion. One tradition says the wedding at Cana, where Christ turned water into wine, was Simon’s own, and that he followed the Lord from that day. Georgian tradition holds that he preached on the eastern shore of the Black Sea and was martyred at Nikopsia, near today’s New Athos, where a cave church bears his name.

  • Feast: May 10 (New Calendar)
  • Lived: 1st century
