Holy Prophet Elijah

9th century BC · Mount Carmel · Feast July 20

Elijah the Tishbite stood against King Ahab and the worship of Baal. He shut the heavens for three and a half years, was fed by ravens, and raised the widow’s son at Zarephath. On Mount Carmel he called down fire from heaven on his sacrifice before the prophets of Baal. At Horeb he heard God in a still, small voice. He did not die but was taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire, and he appeared with Moses at Christ’s Transfiguration. Mountaintop chapels across Greece are dedicated to him.

  • Feast: July 20 (New Calendar)
