St. Boniface of Germany
Winfrid was an English monk who went to preach to the pagan Germans and took the name Boniface. At Geismar he cut down a sacred oak of Thor while the pagans watched for the god to strike him, and many were baptized. He founded monasteries, including Fulda, and organised the German Church. At nearly eighty he was killed by pagans in Frisia while preparing to confirm new Christians.
