Boris was the khan of Bulgaria who was baptized in 864, taking the name Michael, and brought his people to Christ. He welcomed the disciples of Sts. Cyril and Methodius when they were driven from Moravia, and so Bulgaria became the home of Slavonic letters. He retired to a monastery, came out once to stop his son from restoring paganism, and returned to die a monk.
