St. Brendan the Navigator

c. 484–577 · Clonfert · Feast May 16

Brendan was an Irish monk who founded the monastery of Clonfert. The Voyage of St. Brendan tells how he sailed west with his monks in a boat of oxhide in search of the Promised Land of the Saints, celebrating Pascha on the back of a great whale. In 1976 explorers sailed a copy of his boat from Ireland to Newfoundland to show such a voyage was possible.
