St. Clement of Rome

died c. 101 · Chersonesus · Feast November 25

Clement knew the Apostles Peter and Paul and became the third bishop of Rome after Peter. His Letter to the Corinthians, written around 96 to heal a quarrel in that church, is one of the oldest Christian writings after the New Testament. By tradition the emperor Trajan exiled him to the quarries near Chersonesus in Crimea, where he converted many, and he was thrown into the sea with an anchor around his neck. Sts. Cyril and Methodius found his relics there.
