St. Edward the Martyr

c. 962–978 · Shaftesbury · Feast March 18

Edward became king of England at thirteen. Three years later, when he rode to visit his stepmother at Corfe Castle, her servants stabbed him as he took a cup of wine in the saddle, so that her own son could be king. Miracles followed at his grave, and his relics were moved to Shaftesbury Abbey. Rediscovered in the 20th century, they now rest in a Russian Orthodox church at Brookwood in Surrey.

  • Feast: March 18 (New Calendar)
  • Lived: c. 962–978
  • Place: Shaftesbury
  • Relics today: Brookwood, Surrey
