St. Gabriel of Georgia

1929–1995 · Samtavro, Mtskheta · Feast November 2

Goderdzi Urgebadze grew up in Soviet Tbilisi. On May Day in 1965 he set fire to a huge portrait of Lenin in front of a crowd and preached Christ to them. He was beaten, arrested and sent to a psychiatric hospital. Afterward he lived as a fool for Christ, hiding his holiness behind strange behaviour while helping countless people. He reposed in 1995 at the Samtavro convent in Mtskheta, and when his grave was opened in 2012 his body was found incorrupt.

  • Feast: November 2 (New Calendar)
