St. Genevieve of Paris

c. 419–502 · Paris · Feast January 3

Genevieve was a shepherd girl from Nanterre whom St. Germanus of Auxerre blessed and dedicated to God when she was a child. She later lived in Paris, praying and fasting. In 451, when Attila and the Huns were marching on the city, she urged the people to stay and pray instead of fleeing, and the Huns turned away towards Orléans. When the Franks besieged Paris, she slipped out by boat and brought back grain for the starving city. She is the patroness of Paris.
