Saint
St. Hilda of Whitby
Hilda was a princess of Northumbria baptized at thirteen. St. Aidan made her abbess, and she founded the double monastery of Whitby, where five future bishops trained. Kings and ordinary people came to her for advice. She encouraged the cowherd Caedmon, the first English poet whose name we know, to sing Bible stories in English.
