St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco

1896–1966 · San Francisco · Feast July 2

John Maximovitch was a frail, humble monk who barely slept and served the Liturgy every day. As bishop of Shanghai he gathered the city’s orphans, and his orphanage cared for thousands of children. When the communists came he led his flock to safety on the Philippine island of Tubabao and went to Washington himself to win them entry to America. He later served in Western Europe and finally in San Francisco, where he completed the cathedral of the Joy of All Who Sorrow. His incorrupt relics rest there.
