St. Luke of Crimea

1877–1961 · Simferopol · Feast June 11

Valentin Voyno-Yasenetsky was a gifted surgeon and professor who wrote a classic textbook on treating infections. After his wife died he was ordained a priest in 1921, and he kept operating in his cassock with an icon in the theatre. As a bishop he was arrested again and again and spent eleven years in Siberian exile. In World War II he was put in charge of military hospitals, and when his textbook won the Stalin Prize he gave the money to war orphans. As Archbishop of Crimea he went blind but kept serving. He reposed in 1961, and his relics rest in Simferopol.
