Saint
St. Macrina the Younger
Macrina was the eldest of ten children in a family of saints. When her fiancé died she refused to marry, and she turned the family estate at Annesi into a community of prayer, freeing the slaves to live there as sisters. It was she who persuaded her brother Basil to give up worldly ambition. Gregory of Nyssa wrote her life and recorded her last conversation with him on the soul and the resurrection.
- Feast: July 19 (New Calendar)
- Lived: c. 327–379
