St. Maximus Sandovich
Maxim Sandovich was a young Lemko from the Carpathian region of today’s Poland who studied at the Pochaiv Lavra and returned as a priest to lead villagers back to the Orthodox faith. The Austro-Hungarian authorities accused him of treason. At the start of the First World War he was shot without trial in the prison yard at Gorlice, crying “Long live holy Orthodoxy!” He was glorified in 1994.
