St. Neophytos the Recluse

1134–c. 1214 · Paphos, Cyprus · Feast January 24

Neophytos was a farm boy from Kato Drys in Cyprus who ran away from an arranged marriage to become a monk. He carved a cave cell, the Enkleistra, into a hillside near Paphos and lived there sixty years, writing books on Scripture and the troubles of Cyprus under Crusader rule. The cave is covered in beautiful frescoes, and the monastery that grew below it still stands.
