St. Olaf of Norway

995–1030 · Trondheim · Feast July 29

Olaf Haraldsson was a Viking warrior who was baptized in Rouen and returned to rule Norway. He worked to make the country Christian, building churches and bringing in clergy. Driven out by rebels, he took refuge in Kyiv with Prince Yaroslav, then came back and fell in battle at Stiklestad in 1030. His tomb in Trondheim became the great pilgrimage shrine of the north.
