St. Pachomius the Great

c. 292–348 · Tabennisi, Egypt · Feast May 15

Pachomius was a young pagan conscript who was so moved by Christians bringing food to the soldiers that he promised to serve God. He became a hermit, and an angel showed him a rule for monks living together. At Tabennisi on the Nile he founded the first communal monastery, where monks prayed, worked and ate together. By his death thousands of monks and nuns lived in his monasteries.
