St. Paul of Thebes

c. 228–341 · Eastern Desert, Egypt · Feast January 15

Paul fled into the Egyptian desert as a young man during the persecution of Decius and lived in a cave by a spring and a palm tree for nearly a century. A raven brought him half a loaf of bread each day. When St. Anthony, then ninety, was told in a dream that there was a holier monk than he, he found Paul, and that day the raven brought a whole loaf. When Paul died, two lions helped Anthony dig the grave.
