St. Polyeuctus of Melitene

died 259 · Melitene · Feast January 9

Polyeuctus was a Roman officer in Armenia, moved to faith by his Christian friend Nearchus. When the emperor’s edict against Christians was posted, he tore it down and smashed idols being carried in procession. His father-in-law, the governor, begged him to give in, but he was beheaded. In Byzantium oaths were sworn on his name, and his great church in Constantinople was famous for its carving.
