Any fast dayPrep 15 minCook 10 minServes 2
When to eat it. No oil, wine or fish, so it fits even the strict weekdays of Lent.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Simmer the onion and garlic in the water in a wide pot for 3 minutes.
  2. Add the mussels, cover and steam over high heat for 4 to 5 minutes, shaking the pot, until they open.
  3. Throw away any that stay closed.
  4. Add the lemon, parsley and pepper and serve with bread for the broth.

Tip. Shellfish isn’t counted as fish, so with no oil or wine this works on strict days. Follow your parish’s custom.

Fasting customs differ between churches and parishes. When in doubt, follow what your priest gives you. Not sure what today allows? Check the Orthodox calendar.
