    Going for the first time

Check the timeMost parishes celebrate the Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning, often starting between 9 and 10. Times vary, so check the church's website or call ahead when you can.
Come a little earlyLight a candle, find a place to stand and watch. Nobody expects a visitor to know what to do, and someone will usually say hello afterwards.
Dress simplyClothes you'd wear to a family occasion are fine. In some parishes, especially Russian and Serbian ones, women cover their hair. Bring a scarf if you're unsure.
Communion and the blessed breadHoly Communion is for Orthodox Christians. In many parishes, anyone may come up at the end for a piece of blessed bread, the antidoron.

Your first Divine Liturgy, step by step

    Greek, Russian, Antiochian: which one?

Greek, Russian, Serbian, Romanian, Antiochian and OCA parishes all belong to the same Orthodox Church, with one faith and one Communion. They differ in the language of the services, the music and some customs. For a first visit, go to the closest parish, or to the one that serves in a language you understand. Many parishes in North America, Britain and Australia serve mostly in English.

Is a church missing or wrong?

The churches on this map come from OpenStreetMap, the free world map that volunteers keep up to date, and we refresh our copy every month. Greece, Russia, Romania, Serbia and the United States are mapped very well. Coverage is thinner in parts of Africa, Asia and Latin America, and some parishes in Canada, Britain and Australia are still missing.

To fix a church, tap OpenStreetMap under it, sign in with a free account and edit it there. The change reaches this page at the next monthly refresh.

To add a missing parish, place it on openstreetmap.org as a place of worship, with religion set to Christian and a denomination such as greek_orthodox, russian_orthodox, serbian_orthodox, antiochian_orthodox or simply orthodox. Adding the website and service times helps the next visitor most.

Rather not edit a map? Tell us about it in the Discord and we'll add it for you.

Tradition labels come from how each church is tagged on the map and from its name, so a few may be missing or wrong. Coptic, Ethiopian, Armenian and other Oriental Orthodox churches are a separate communion and aren't shown here. Eastern vs Oriental Orthodox explains the difference.

    Questions

How do I find an Orthodox church near me?

Type your city or town into the search box at the top of this page, or tap Use my location. You will see the closest Orthodox churches on a map and in a list, nearest first, each with a directions link and a website or service times when we have them.

Can I visit an Orthodox church if I am not Orthodox?

Yes. Visitors are welcome at the Divine Liturgy and the other services. You can stand, watch, light a candle and pray. Holy Communion is only for Orthodox Christians, but in many parishes anyone may come forward at the end for the blessed bread.

Is there a difference between Greek, Russian and Antiochian Orthodox churches?

They share one faith and one Communion. What changes is the language of the services, the style of singing and some customs. For a first visit, the closest parish or the one that serves in your language is a good choice.

Why is my church missing from the map?

The churches come from OpenStreetMap, which volunteers keep up to date, and a parish appears here once it is on that map. You can add it yourself in a few minutes, or tell us in the Discord and we will add it. The map refreshes every month.

Does the map include Coptic, Ethiopian or Armenian churches?

No. Those churches belong to the Oriental Orthodox family, a separate communion with its own history. This map shows Eastern Orthodox churches.
