Cave of the Apocalypse, Patmos

c. 95

Around 95 the emperor Domitian exiled St. John the Theologian to the small island of Patmos. In a cave halfway up the hill, John heard “a loud voice like a trumpet” and received the visions of the Book of Revelation, which his disciple Prochorus wrote down. Pilgrims can still see the rock where he rested his head and the three-fold crack in the ceiling through which, tradition says, the voice came. The great monastery of St. John stands on the hilltop above.
