Hosios Loukas

10th century

St. Luke the Steiriote was a hermit and wonderworker who died in 953 on the slopes of Mount Helicon. Pilgrims came to his tomb, and in the 11th century a great monastery was built there. Its main church holds some of the finest Byzantine mosaics in the world, glowing on gold, and the saint’s relics still rest there. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with Daphni and Nea Moni.
