Pochaiv Lavra

1240

By tradition, in 1240 the Theotokos appeared in a pillar of fire on the hill of Pochaiv, and where she stood she left a footprint in the rock that still flows with healing water. A monastery grew there, and in the 17th century St. Job of Pochaiv defended it and the Orthodox faith against pressure from the Uniate Church. Its golden domes rise high above the plains of western Ukraine.
