Putna Monastery

1466

St. Stephen the Great built Putna in 1466–1469 after one of his victories, and chose it as his burial place. Tradition says he fired an arrow from a hilltop to decide where the altar should stand. It was a great centre of learning and of manuscript copying, and Romanians call it the Jerusalem of the Romanian people. Stephen’s tomb is in the church.
