Romanian Patriarchate

1925

Christianity in Romania traces itself to St. Andrew, who by tradition preached in Scythia Minor, today’s Dobruja. The Romanian Church became independent in 1885 and a patriarchate in 1925. It survived the communist years, when many priests were jailed, and today it is the second-largest Orthodox Church. The new People’s Salvation Cathedral in Bucharest, consecrated in 2018, is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
