Valaam

14th century

Valaam is an archipelago in Lake Ladoga in the far north of Russia, and by tradition St. Andrew planted a cross there. The monastery was founded by Sts. Sergius and Herman of Valaam and became famous for its strict life. In 1793 it sent monks, St. Herman among them, on the mission to Alaska. After the communist years, when the monastery was closed, monks returned in 1989.
