Sts. Sergius and Herman of Valaam
Sergius and Herman were monks who came to the islands of Lake Ladoga and founded the monastery of Valaam. By tradition they converted the pagan Karelians around them. Their monastery became a school of strict monastic life that sent St. Herman and the first missionaries to Alaska.
