St. Athanasios the Athonite

c. 920–1003 · Great Lavra, Mount Athos · Feast July 5

Athanasios was a monk from Trebizond and a friend of the general Nikephoros Phokas, who later became emperor. With Nikephoros’ support he founded the Great Lavra on Mount Athos in 963, the first large monastery on the Holy Mountain, and wrote its rule. Many followed him and Athos grew into the centre of Orthodox monasticism. Around 1003 he and five monks were killed when the dome they were building collapsed.
