St. Gerasimos of the Jordan

died 475 · Jordan Valley, near Jericho · Feast March 4

Gerasimos founded a lavra near the Jordan where monks lived alone in their cells during the week and gathered on weekends. One day a lion came limping to him with a thorn in its paw. He pulled it out and dressed the wound, and the lion stayed, carrying water for the monks. When Gerasimos died, the lion lay down on his grave and died there.
