Hermogenes was a priest in Kazan who found the wonderworking Kazan icon of the Theotokos in 1579. As Patriarch of Moscow during the Time of Troubles, when the Poles held the Kremlin, he refused to bless their rule and sent letters calling the people to free Moscow. He was starved to death in the Chudov monastery in 1612, months before the city was liberated.
