Saint
St. Tikhon of Moscow
Vasily Bellavin served as bishop of North America from 1898 to 1907. He moved the cathedral to New York, founded St. Tikhon’s Monastery in Pennsylvania, and welcomed converts in English. Back in Russia he was elected Patriarch of Moscow by lot in 1917, just as the Bolsheviks took power. He condemned the killing of the innocent, was imprisoned and harassed, and guided the Church through the first years of Soviet persecution. He died in 1925, worn out.
