Χωριάτικη νηστίσιμη

Greek salad without the feta

Wine & oil daysPrep 15 minNo cookingServes 4
When to eat it. Made with oil. Keep it for days when wine and oil are allowed, like weekends in Lent and most of the Nativity Fast.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Put the tomatoes, cucumber, pepper and onion in a wide bowl and salt them.
  2. Scatter the olives and capers on top.
  3. Drizzle with oil and vinegar and sprinkle with oregano.
  4. Serve straight away with plenty of bread for the juices.

Tip. A spoon of tahini thinned with lemon makes a creamy stand-in for the feta.

Fasting customs differ between churches and parishes. When in doubt, follow what your priest gives you. Not sure what today allows? Check the Orthodox calendar.
