Strict-Day Dakos
Ντάκος
Cretan barley rusk with tomato and oregano
Any fast dayPrep 10 minNo cookingServes 4
When to eat it. No oil, wine or fish, so it fits even the strict weekdays of Lent.
Ingredients
Method
- Sprinkle the rusks with a little water to soften them slightly.
- Season the grated tomato with salt.
- Pile the tomato onto the rusks.
- Top with capers, onion and oregano. Let them soak 5 minutes before eating.
Tip. On Crete it is dressed with lots of olive oil. This bare version keeps the strict day, but check the rusks: some bakers add oil to the dough.
Fasting customs differ between churches and parishes. When in doubt, follow what your priest gives you. Not sure what today allows? Check the Orthodox calendar.
