St. Kassiani the Hymnographer

c. 810–865 · Constantinople · Feast September 7

Kassiani was a gifted noble girl presented to the young emperor Theophilos at a bride show. When he told her that through a woman came evil, she answered that through a woman came good, meaning the Theotokos, and he chose another bride. She founded a convent and wrote hymns and verses. Her Troparion of Kassiani, the sinful woman’s lament, is chanted at the Bridegroom service on Holy Tuesday night.
