St. Romanos the Melodist

c. 490–556 · Constantinople · Feast October 1

Romanos was a deacon from Syria who served at the church of the Theotokos in Constantinople. He had no gift for singing, but one Christmas Eve the Theotokos appeared to him in a dream and gave him a scroll to eat. He woke and sang “Today the Virgin gives birth to the Transcendent One.” He wrote hundreds of kontakia, long sung sermons, and is the greatest poet of Byzantium.
