St. Gregory V of Constantinople
George Angelopoulos was born in Dimitsana in the Peloponnese and served three times as Ecumenical Patriarch. When the Greek War of Independence broke out in 1821, the Sultan held him responsible. On Easter Sunday he was hanged from the central gate of the Patriarchate in his vestments, and his body was thrown into the Bosporus. The gate has stayed closed ever since.
