St. Mark of Ephesus
Mark Eugenikos was the Metropolitan of Ephesus at the Council of Ferrara-Florence in 1438–1439, where the Byzantine emperor, desperate for Western help against the Turks, agreed to union with Rome. Mark alone among the bishops refused to sign, and when the Pope heard, he said, “Then we have accomplished nothing.” Mark went home and strengthened the faithful, who rejected the union. He died in 1444.
