St. Andrew the Fool for Christ

10th century · Blachernae, Constantinople · Feast October 2

Andrew was a Slavic slave in Constantinople who feigned madness to hide his holiness, sleeping in the streets and enduring mockery. During an all-night vigil in the church of Blachernae he and his disciple Epiphanius saw the Theotokos in the air, spreading her veil over the people in protection. That vision is the feast of the Protection of the Theotokos, celebrated on October 1, especially in Russia and Ukraine.

  • Feast: October 2 (New Calendar)
