Saint
St. Macarius the Great
Macarius was a camel driver who became a hermit and was falsely accused of fathering a child. He worked to support the woman without complaining until the truth came out, then fled to the desert of Scetis, where thousands of monks gathered around him. He was so gentle that a monk once said the devil complained, “I fast more than you and never sleep, but your humility defeats me.” Homilies on prayer and the Holy Spirit are attributed to him.

- Lived: c. 300–391
